Welcome Ian Carey, Curator of University Galleries and Instructor
August 20, 2024
The University of North Florida (UNF) and MOCA Jax are pleased to welcome Ian Carey to the team as Curator of University Galleries and Instructor. Carey will curate the UNF Gallery of Art, Lufrano Intercultural Gallery at UNF, and the UNF Gallery at MOCA, as well as collaborate with faculty for exhibits in the UNF library. He is teaching the course curatorial practices.
"I look forward to working with UNF students and creating dynamic programming that will enhance our students' educational experiences and contribute to the greater Jacksonville area community," says Carey. "My vision is to develop exhibition programming that aligns with the Senior Curator's ideas, while also showcasing the diverse range of conceptual and technical approaches prevalent in contemporary art. This approach will provide our students and patrons with a broad spectrum of topics to ponder and reflect on during their visit."
Ian Carey received his BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA in Painting and Drawing from Illinois State University. He also earned a BAS in Anthropology and Political Science from the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana. Ian has taught painting, drawing, and museum studies courses at Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, and California State Polytechnic Humboldt. He has served as the Merwin and Wakeley Galleries director at Illinois Wesleyan University and, most recently, as the Permanent Art Collection Curator at Indiana State University, teaching political philosophy and museum studies coursework. Ian is a working artist and has had the opportunity to exhibit his work nationally and internationally. His underlying teaching philosophy attempts to integrate primary resources and the exhibition programming he creates into unique learning experiences for his students, highlighting the complexity of contemporary art and how it informs our understanding of our everyday lives.
