ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
TIME COMMITMENT
Hours are flexible; interns are expected to work at the museum a minimum of 120 hours to receive three course credit hours.
STIPEND
No financial stipend. To be considered as an intern for MOCA and not a volunteer, college and university credit must be a requirement of your internship. We are willing to work with colleges and universities to satisfy course credit requirements.
SELECTION PROCESS
Candidates will be selected based upon their skills and qualifications along with an interview with the department manager. Candidates will be notified as soon as a decision is made.

CURATORIAL INTERNSHIP
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Works closely with the curatorial team managing the Museum’s Permanent Collection and facilitating the exhibitions program.
Specific responsibilities might include:
- Work with curators in managing physical and computerized records for the Permanent Collection
- Research artists in the collection and exhibition projects
- Assist in collection inventory, photography, and digitizing of works in the Permanent Collection
- Some art handling and gallery preparation with supervision from the curatorial team
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should have an interest and preferably some background in the arts and in learning about aspects of art collection management, exhibition curation, experience with Windows-based software systems, some database experience helpful, administrative skills to handle paperwork, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines required.
TIME COMMITMENT
This position requires a minimum of eight to ten hours per week.

DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the coordinator of membership engagement and the assistant director of development, the development intern will undertake fundraising initiatives to support the museum and assist with membership operations. While open to all colleges and degree paths, the ideal candidate for this role will be interested in gaining real-world experience in non-profit management, business development, and networking.
Specific responsibilities might include:
- Checking in with the coordinator of membership engagement and/or the assistant director of development each day the intern is on duty.
- Fostering strong relationships with current and lapsed members and donors.
- Representing MOCA Jacksonville at events inside and outside the Museum when available.
- Assisting with membership operations.
- Maintaining relationships with community partners.
- Completing other relevant assignments given each week.
REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should feel comfortable engaging with MOCA members, donors, and community partners both over the phone and in person. They should also have basic computer skills (including Microsoft office) strong communication skills, punctuality, dependability, and an entrepreneurial spirit.
TIME COMMITMENT
Fifteen hours per week. Schedule can be customized to the intern’s class schedule. Shifts must occur between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. Occasional Friday evening and Saturday daytime events and 5-9 P.M. during Downtown Art Walk on the first Wednesday of each month depending on the intern’s availability.

EDUCATION INTERNSHIP
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Education Department of MOCA Jacksonville seeks enthusiastic and engaging students to assist across a number of student, public, and university facing programs. Internship roles and responsibilities coincide with the UNF semester calendar and reflect the programmatic priorities of the museum and department. As such, intern responsibilities will vary and can include the following: office work, tour support, outreach into the community, mentoring students, and representing the museum to a wide variety of audiences.
Summer Semester (May through July): Summer Camp support
- MOCA Jacksonville offers themed weekly camp sessions for ages 6-14 throughout the Summer. Summer Camp @ MOCA also features weekly movement activities, such as yoga and dance.
- Student interns support the museum’s Summer Camp program by assisting classroom instructors, supervising students during break times, preparing classroom materials, leading gallery activities, and giving support to the Camp Director.
- Interns in this role must complete a federal-level background check.

Fall Semester (August through November): School Tours support
- MOCA offers a variety of program opportunities for schools, including in-person and virtual school tours, in-classroom resources, and engagement opportunities that support literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- Student interns prepare tour materials and spaces, including workshop set-up and clean up, organizing and prepping art supplies for students, co-leading school tours, and supporting tour leads. Additional responsibilities include classroom and group management and facilitating post-tour surveys with teachers and students.

Spring Semester (January through April): Education program and outreach support
- MOCA Jacksonville offers many additional evening, weekend, and outreach programs such as Teen Art Council, Voice of the People, Autism Creates, Kids Art Lab, MOCA Movie Night, Coffee with a Curator, and more.
- Student interns will support, attend, and represent the museum at a number of on-site and off-site programs throughout the semester.

REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should be pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies in art history, education, arts administration, art education, art therapy, or museum studies. Previous classroom experience is highly recommended. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with public speaking and interacting with students of all ages.

MARKETING INTERNSHIP
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the director of communications, the marketing intern will write for the MOCA Jacksonville website and assist with marketing/promotion activities and events.
Specific responsibilities might include:
- Checking in with the director of communications each day the intern is on duty
- Completing assignments given each week
- Researching and writing blog posts and other assignments
- Assisting with social media
- Representing MOCA Jacksonville at events inside and outside the museum
- Managing and updating a database of media contacts
- Ensuring diversity in age, gender, race, ethnicity, and ability in coverage
- Finding compelling and innovative ways to complete assignments
- Maintaining accuracy in all communications
- Dressing appropriately for museum business
REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should have advanced writing skills with excellent attention to detail in spelling, grammar, style, and accuracy; strong smart phone photography skills; expert computer skills including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud; strong communication skills; punctuality; dependability; and an entrepreneurial spirit.

RESEARCH AND INTERPRETATION INTERNSHIP
POSITION DESCRIPTION
This position provides office, research, and interpretive support to the Curatorial staff. The intern will be responsible for researching MOCA collections as well as loaned works in order to compose interpretive material such as gallery guides and audio tours for upcoming exhibitions. The Research and Interpretation Intern will also assist MOCA staff in editing museum exhibitions-related publications.
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should be pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies in art history, art education, arts administration, or museum studies. The ideal candidate will have research experience and excellent writing and editing skills. Organization, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines are a must.
TIME COMMITMENT
This position requires a minimum of ten hours per week.

SURVEY INTERNSHIP
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Work closely with the department directors for one or more weeks at a time.
Specific responsibilities might include:
- Work with curator in managing physical and computerized records for the Permanent Collection. Responsibilities may include some art handling and gallery preparation with supervision from the curatorial team
- Work with the education department to participate in our summer camp program, student tours, and outreach activities and some office support work
- Under the direction of the development team, general tasks include marketing/promotion activities, fundraising mailings, and special events.
- Work with marketing team to write blog posts, social media posts, and media releases.

Applicants should have an interest in and preferably some background in the arts and experience with Windows-based software systems, some database experience helpful, administrative skills to handle paperwork, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines required.

ARTS UNF SOCIAL MEDIA ASSISTANT
MOCA Jacksonville is offering an experiential learning internship opportunity for Hicks Honors College students. This position will report directly to the Director of Communications, Arts UNF and will develop social media content for the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville. Ideal students will be willing to commit to at least two consecutive semesters of participation.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Social Media intern will develop a deep understanding of the museum’s current social media tactics and develop a strategy and plan to enhance its social media communications. The intern will assist with all social media-related activities and complete a significant project. Tasks will include:
- Attending meetings with museum departments and community partners
- Collaborating with teams across the museum and university
- Crafting messaging and associated creative, including capturing and editing photo and video content in alignment with the museum’s brand standards and creating basic graphics
- Assist in maintenance of current social media accounts, including crafting post content, scheduling posts and events, and responding to comments, messages, and reviews
- Pulling reports and analyzing data for each account
- The creation of a strategy and plan as outlined below
SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY AND PLAN
- EVALUATION: The intern will evaluate MOCA’s current social media accounts and present a status report, including a breakdown of audiences, evaluation of audience activity, and recommendations for increasing engagement.
- PLATFORMS: Research social media opportunities not currently being used by the museum. Present an opinion for or against MOCA’s participation in each platform, including pros and cons, potential ROI, and a basic strategy addressing establishment of an audience and how to make posts engaging and relevant to the audience(s) on the platform(s). If approved, the intern will establish new accounts on behalf of the museum.
- STRATEGY & PLAN: Create a comprehensive social media strategy and plan for the following program season, including a strategic outline, a breakdown of target audiences, communication goals and methods for each platform, post content, and metrics of success. The plan will be created initially as a Word Document and should be structured around the museum’s exhibition and public program schedule, along with relevant dates and holidays, and impact/outcome stories. It will include copy and imagery for each post (photo, video, graphic), any related links, hashtags, and partners to be tagged. Each post should identify its purpose, as related to the strategy, as well as the target audience, platform, and goal. Platform analytics, museum data, exhibition and program descriptions, and a library of photographs will be made available to the intern for this project.
- REVIEW & APPROVAL: The strategy and plan will be presented to the Director of Communications in stages for feedback and revision. Content will be evaluated on relevance, alignment with the strategy and brand, grammar and readability, and effectiveness of communication.
- IMPLEMENTATION: Once the strategy and plan have been approved, the intern will schedule content on the museum’s social media accounts. They will monitor changes at the museum and make updates to the posts as appropriate, with the approval of the Director of Communications.

CONTENT ASSIGNMENT
Create a series of social media posts promoting the upcoming event The Armory South Book Launch & Talk. Information about the event can be found in the linked title and additional information can be found in MOCA’s web page for the related exhibition, The Armory South: The 1924 Jacksonville Woman’s Club Exhibition Rediscovered. The final assignment should include:
- A brief identification of at least three key audiences for this event.
- Text for 3 social media posts promoting the event with the goal of reaching the three identified audiences. Think about the event details that might interest different audiences and the types of content most likely to resonate.
- Each post should have an accompanying visual element—photo, video, graphic, etc. A selection of images can be found on Dropbox.
