New York City artist John Hee Taek Chae is featured in the sixth annual Barbara Ritzman Devereux Visiting Artist Workshop at the University of North Florida. The workshop supplements traditional academic and applied art instruction by providing students the opportunity to work with distinguished artists that represent a broad range of visual media. Chae earned his BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2011. Born in Boulder, Colorado, Chae grew up in Korea. In this exhibition, he investigates personal contradictions through the process of art-making. He employs various forms of media manipulation to mediate issues of identity, race, nostalgia, cultural adaptation, and social mobility. Chae graphically illustrates the internal artistic conflict between imagery and cultural identification by using various techniques including digital image manipulation, screen printing, and direct surface treatment.
