SPOTLIGHT: MARC CHAGALL'S DRESS

NOVEMBER 26, 2018 - FEBRUARY 24, 2019

Portrait of Marc Chagall by Yehuda Pen

YEHUDA PEN, Portrait of Marc Chagall, c. 1915, Oil on canvas. Private Collection. Public Domain.

Originally worn by ballerina Barbara Fallis, this costume includes hand-painted details by Russian-French artist Marc Chagall. While the exact ballet is unknown, the performing arts were a significant source of inspiration for Chagall throughout his long career. He designed costumes and monumental sets for the ballet and opera in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Donated to the Museum as part of the Norman E. Fisher Collection, the Untitled (Ballet Costume) unites the lineage of performance art, specifically its emphasis on materiality in Project Atrium: Amanda Coogan, to the Permanent Collection and free to the public.
