MICRO-MACRO: ANDREW SENDOR AND ALI BANISADR

Micro-Macro is the first exhibition to bring together the work of two acclaimed New-York based painters, Andrew Sendor and Ali Banisadr. This seemingly unexpected pairing - juxtaposing small-scale, photo-realistic paintings by Sendor, with large-scale, predominately abstract paintings by Banisadr — explores the natural kinship found in the work of these two 'pure painters'. Despite their obvious stylistic difference, common to both is the painterly process, as well as influences, ideas, and themes fundamental to both bodies of work — the constructed narrative; the imagination; the theatrical; and the history of art.
ARTISTS
ALI BANISADR
Ali Banisadr (born 1976, Tehran, Iran) is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Banisadr received a BFA from School of Visual Arts (2005), and an MFA from New York Academy of Art (2007). His work has been the subject of recent Museum group exhibitions including: “Chaos and Awe: Painting in the 21st century” at the Frist Art Museum, Nashville, TN, which traveled to the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA (2018), “Rebel, Jester, Mystic Poet: Contemporary Persians” at the Aga Khan Museum, Toronto (2017), which traveled to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (2017). “Love Me/ Love Me Not,” Contemporary Art from Azerbaijan and its Neighbors, The 55th International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale,Venice, Italy(2013). Banisadr's work has been reviewed in publications including, ART news, Art in America, Flash Art, The New York times, Frieze Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Brooklyn rail, among others. His work are in public collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY, The British Museum, London, UK, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA, Centre Pompidou, Paris, France among others.
ANDREW SENDOR
Born in 1977, Andrew Sendor currently lives and works in New York City. Sendor's work is characterized by a meticulous draftsmanship that serves to illuminate his ongoing engagement with the interrelation of photorealism and invented narrative structures. Most recently, a solo exhibition of his work was presented at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University (2015-16). His works have been included in numerous museum exhibitions, including the Funen Art Museum, Odense, Denmark; Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, Peekskill, NY; Knoxville Museum of Art, Knoxville, TN; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; and the ARKEN Museum of Art, Ishøj, Denmark. In 2014, Sendor mounted a solo exhibition in conjunction with his residency at The Wright Museum, Beloit College. His works are in private and public collections worldwide, including The Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum, MSU, and The Morgan Library & Museum, New York.
