Project Atrium: Juan Fontanive
Interested in the language of machines and film, Brooklyn-based sculptor Juan Fontanive creates a multi-tiered kinetic work formed by handmade pulleys, shafts, drives, and timing belts. Seemingly weightless yet constructed by steel, Movement 4 is a site specific interconnected system of rotating bars and painted metal circles that flip at synchronized intervals. The animated components consist of vibrant colors that disappear to white, presenting a theme of two opposite states: the experience of fullness and emptiness. As with all of Fontanive's kinetic work, the viewer is invited to look and listen.
