We are excited to announce a return to in-person Summer Art Camp this year! With limited capacity and continued mask wearing, our education department looks forward to safely providing a fun and dynamic camp experience. Virtual camp experiences are also available throughout the break as well. MOCA's education team builds dynamic themes to inspire interest not only in art techniques but also exhibitions at the museum opening the world of contemporary art for campers to explore. Both in-person and virtual campers will enjoy art on view in the museum through tours and engage in lively discussion. Campers are encouraged to think critically about artwork, voice their opinions, and learn from one another. This year's camp themes include All About Abstract, Storytelling, Art Scientists and more!

As an art educator, some of my most rewarding work comes from inspiring children to think about art in new ways. Unlike tours, which provide a singular experience with the museum, camp provides cumulative experience and greater opportunities for one-on-one interaction. Sometimes this can mean getting campers to re-examine artwork they may have overlooked or dismissed as boring. Sometimes it can mean creative problem-solving with their own projects. I love being able to teach kids about art history and artistic traditions from around the world; art is after all one of humanity's oldest forms of expression and in many ways can help us better understand and respect one another. The group setting of camp is also a unique environment; children are often very adept at teaching and helping one another when given the opportunity. This is particularly important with campers who may not typically consider themselves artistic. Peer support is incredibly valuable in helping them see that art is in fact something fun that's for everyone, it doesn't have to be perfect or professional!
