    Porgy & Bess (1993)

    In coordination with Kara Walker: Cut to the Quick, MOCA Movie Night presents, Porgy and Bess. This production is an adaptation of the 1935 opera by George and Ira Gershwin, based on the novel and play by DuBose Heyward and depicting the lives of the black inhabitants of the fictional Catfish Row in 1920s South Carolina.

    Shadow Puppetry with Orran Scruggs

    Studio Practice is a monthly series of hands-on, practical art classes where students of all levels learn to create in varying media. This month, in coordination with Kara Walker: Cut to the Quick, Studio Practice presents Shadow Puppetry with Orran Scruggs. Students will work on character and scenery creation and storytelling.

    Join us in-person at MOCA for a lunch and discussion with Dr. David Jamison, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of History at Edward Waters University. Drawing on the exhibition, Kara Walker: Cut to the Quick, Dr. Jamison's presentation will give a vital historical context to the imagery on display.

     Join us for an evening of inspiring film as we present monthly screenings connecting to the themes and ideas of our exhibitions and current events. In coordination with exhibition Kara Walker: Cut to the Quick, MOCA Movie Night presents a film by another artist using satire to explore America's legacy of racism and themes of history, race, gender, and stereotypes.
