MOCA SHOP Talk: Brandy Brong, Founder of StringStrangStrung

November 6, 2017 // by Heather Sloan

For Brandy Brong, there are two facets to being a maker. The craft and the creativity. As part of our Makery Jax series, we asked Brandy a few questions on how she discovered string art and and her journey to launching StringStrangStrung.

Who are you and what do you do?

I am a Jacksonville native, wife and mother of 4, and founder of StringStrangStrung. I create modern wall art using the string art technique. It was made popular in the late 60s, and I'm utilizing this medium to make it more relevant today.

Why do you do what you do?

I love creating. I always have. Even before I started StringStrangStrung, I was constantly working on some sort of project or making things for my own home. StringStrangStrung allows me to have an outlet to do so, and I love it so much.

How do you work?

There are two sides to creating a piece of art for me. There is the craftsman side, where I have to use power tools. I have an outdoor work space for cutting and sanding wood. The other side is the creative part. Once I have a piece of wood ready, I move to my indoor studio and create a template for that specific piece. Sometimes it's a hand drawing, or sometimes it's more technical and I have to design it on my computer. I hammer in each nail by hand, and each one is intentional with a purpose in creating the final design. I apply the string last. This is still a very meticulous process, but definitely allows more room for creativity in choosing specific colors or textures.

What's your background?

My background is humble. I haven't attended an art school or taken any formal training. I just have a strong desire to create combined with an equally strong work ethic. I wanted something different in my home than stores had to offer, so I had to make it myself.

How has your practice changed over time?

My practice has definitely evolved. I think when I first started out, I was trying to create too much of what I imagined others liking. It started to feel less authentic, so I started making more of what I loved. I feel more engaged and connected to each piece I make knowing that it's something I personally love.
